British Formula 1 competitor McLaren unveils its new supercar - the MP4-12C

McLaren will take on rival European manufacturers such as Ferrari and Porsche with the "affordable" two-seater roadcar.

The MP4-12C is anticipated to sell for around 150,000 pounds ($250,000).

McLaren says using a lightweight material will allow it to put the MP4-12C on sale for around half the price tag that would normally be expected.

The new supercar is unveiled by Formula One drivers Lewis Hamilton (L) and Jenson Button at the McLaren Technology centre in Woking, southern England.

The kind of poverty that caused this catastrophe needs to be tackled, but to do it America's approach to reducing poverty needs a rethink, Brooks writes in the New York Times.

Trillions of dollars in aid to the developing world have done little to reduce poverty in the poorest countries, Brooks writes, arguing that cultural issues need to be addressed instead of just throwing money at the problem. Haiti's culture is doggedly progress-resistant: voo doo spawns passivity, children are neglected, irresponsibility is rampant and social mistrust is widespread, Brooks writes.

Turning the country around will require the kind of "intrusive paternalism" that worked in poor neighborhoods in the US with programs like the Harlem Children’s Zone and the No Excuses schools. Even one neighborhood at a time, he writes, it would be a better start.

Mars polar regions are of great interest as they are known to contain records of past atmospheric, environmental, and climate conditions.

The impact crater - 330m in diameter - is used to estimate the age of the surface.

More than 10 per cent of the surface area in the North of Mars is covered by windblown sand dunes.

This large crescent-shaped hill is located in a region where some dunes have been shrinking.

This image shows a dust devil blowing across the Martian surface.

Dust devils form when the temperature of the atmosphere near the ground is much warmer than that above.

The fading tracks of the Opportunity Rover near Victoria Crater.

The Victoria Crater, near the equator of Mars, is approximately 800m in diameter.

The distinctive shape is caused by erosion and crater wall material moving downhill. A field of sand dunes sits on the crater floor.

London received a striking visitor today as the worlds newly-crowned tallest man, Turkish Sultan Kösen (26) who measures a staggering 8 ft 1 in (246.5 cm), toured the city in celebration of the launch of Guinness World Records 2010 edition (published 17th of September).

Earlier this year, Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief, Craig Glenday, travelled to Turkey to personally validate the claim of Kösen under strict Guinness World Records guidelines, which stipulate that the claimant must be measured three times in one day. The average of the measurements is the definitive height as it is medically proven that the body expands and shrinks throughout the day. To Glendays surprise, he discovered that Kösen also has the worlds largest hands and largest feet measuring 27.5 cm and 36.5 cm, respectively, making him a triple record holder. Kösen is also the first person in more than a decade to officially measure over 8 ft in height. He takes the record title from Chinas Bao Xi Shun (7 ft 8.95 in), after Ukrainian Leonid Stadnyks (8 ft 5.5 in) claim to the title was discredited in 2008 when he refused to be independently measured.

The Caxton Awards are given out each year for excellence in newspaper advertising. This year 17 awards were given out to Australian advertising agencies, including the overall and prestigious Quinlivan Black Award.
In this gallery we look at this year's winners.

1. Title: "Best Job in the World"

An advertisement for Queensland Tourism that ran as a regular classified ad in newspapers.

2. Title: "LX570 Sunroofs" Canyon

Tagline: Where luxury has never been before

3. Title: "Sliding Doors"

The ad asks readers to slide open the door...which reveals the inside of the cupboard.

4. An advertisement for a women's beauty product run at the time of the US election.

5. Title: "Tear"

The agency explains the ad: "Tearing along the grain of the paper produces a straight line, which is impossible to achieve while tearing against it - the perfect demonstration of Electronic Stability Control."

The horizontal tear-line explains that this is what it is like to drive with Electronic Stability Control, the vertical tear-line explains that this is like driving without Electronic Stability Control.

6. Title: "Guide Dogs can go anywhere"

More than 40 guide dogs were placed throughout the newspaper to highlight that they are allowed unrestricted access to most locations. An ad explaining this point was in the middle of the paper.

Ad copy: This year, Mum's giving me flowers.

I don't deserve them.

I deserve a good swift kick up the bum.

But Mums aren't like that. No matter how

badly you screw up they always say

"Never mind love, we all still love you."

Doesn't your Mum do that?

Unconditional. That's the word.

All that stuff about your life flashing before

your eyes is absolutely true.

And I couldn't believe it Mum, you were in

practically every scene.

And all those crappy movie scenes about

never telling people how much you love them

till it's too late? Well they're true too.

Mum, you gave me the gift of life, and what

did I do with it?

Played with it for a bit, then threw it away.

And now, after all those Mother's Days

I forgot because I was too busy with mates

or chasing after girls, what does she do?

She brings me flowers.

I never gave my Mum a thought as I was

flying down the road that night.

But I bet a little bit of her was thinking about

me as she watched TV in the hours before

that knock on the door.

My advice?

Treat this Mother's Day like it's your last.

Then spend a year making sure it isn't.
